“The Squirrel’s Nest” is a small 10 acre property easily accessible from Polk Cutoff Road and Route 8. The Squirrel’s Nest makes a great place to pitch a tent on the way to points north or to the wild country south of Franklin. It’s adjacent to Maurer’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest private outdoors goods stores in Western Pennsylvania where you can find plenty of camping, fishing and hunting supplies.
The Squirrel’s Nest offers no water or electrical hook-ups but there is parking so it’s easy to keep your supplies close. The Nest puts you at the center of one of Pennsylvania’s great fishing regions; you’ll be surrounded by French Creek, the mid-reaches of the Allegheny River, Sandy Creek and Sandy Lake apart from dozens of smaller streams. The largest state game land in western PA is almost adjacent to the property and bow hunting can be pursued on the property itself. The property and nearby woods certainly offers potential for mushroom hunters (chanterelles are plentiful in season). The 10 acre lot is a fine place to overnight during a long cycling excursion along Route 8. Likewise for long-range hiking. The waterways surrounding The Squirrel’s Nest all offer unique kayak opportunities and kayaks can be rented nearby.
Also in the Venango County region you can expect to find state game lands in all directions of the compass. Historic Oil Creek enters the Allegheny about 20 minutes north of The Squirrel’s Nest, offering fishing and cycling and hiking trails. A network of rail trails can be found nearby, with the hub of 3 of these trails being found at Belmar along the Allegheny. And nearby Franklin offers a quaint Victorian downtown with all the amenities including coffee!
